We encourage friendly fellowship and lively discussion about great literature, fan fiction, and popular films related to Jane Austen among residents of the Sandwich Isles. Though not, strictly speaking, connected to the continent, we are part of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and we maintain contact with fellow Janites around the Pacific Rim.

“They could all eat; and the beautiful pyramids of grapes, nectarines, and peaches soon collected them around the table.”
— Pride and Prejudice
Activities
Members and their guests enjoy repast, repartee, and spirited games at our annual Jane Austen Birthday tea, as well as visits to tropical gardens, movie outings, and more, both in-person and online.
Occasional discussions and talks provide food for thought, and we share opportunities to participate in online programs hosted by sister regions.
We co-hosted the first-ever Jane Austen in the Pan Pacific Conference virtually in late 2021. View the sessions on YouTube.
“‘The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.’”
—Henry Tilney, Northanger Abbey
Reading Group
Interested members meet periodically to discuss a work by or about Jane Austen or those she has inspired. Next up: Jane Austen’s Bookshelf on March 28.
We have explored Austen’s six novels, Sanditon, Teenage Writings and letters. We’ve read Lucy Worsley’s biography Jane Austen at Home; fan fiction like Old Friends and New Fancies, The Other Bennet Sister and the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy; adaptations including Ayesha at Last; and fantasies like The Jane Austen Project and our founder Bob Newell’s Courting Jane.
“‘My idea of good company is…clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company.’”
— Anne Elliot, Persuasion
